Students & Educators
Visits for Schools
Tours, Pre-K to Grade 12
September 2009–June 2010

All programs are discussion-based and interactive and are led by experienced educators. Students will further develop their critical thinking skills through active conversations and activities centered on works of art. Programs relate to the New York State Learning Standards and the New York City Curriculum Blueprint. The program you choose will be customized for your students’ age group and abilities, and the museum welcomes inclusion classes and students with disabilities or special needs. Tours in select languages, including ASL and visual description, are available (additional lead time may be necessary to schedule such a tour). The museum can accommodate up to 60 students at a time.
Themed Tours
The museum offers a series of themed tours that can be tailored for any age group. All groups have the option to sketch as part of the gallery experience.

Learning to Look
Students develop their visual literacy and critical thinking skills by working together to decode works of folk art in the galleries through careful viewing and group discussion.

Introduction to Folk Art
Students consider the special qualities of folk art through an exploration of works on view in special exhibitions and from the permanent collection installations.

Places
Students examine the different places that folk artists depict in their works of art, including rolling farmscapes, cozy interiors, urban environments, and fantastical landscapes.

People
Students explore the vast array of portraits on view in the museum and consider ways in which folk artists reveal and conceal personality traits and other important aspects of their subjects’ lives through their portraits.

Artists’ Materials
Students explore folk artists’ inventive use of traditional and unconventional materials in the creation of the works, from paint and clay to found objects such as bones, branches, and tin cans.
